Tips to avoiding the flu this Season….

One more sleep and winter is officially here in Australia! So I thought I would do a little research on how to avoid getting the dreaded flu. Here is what I found out…

One of the most common ways people catch colds and the flu is by rubbing their nose or their eyes after their hands have been contaminated with a virus so…

Wash your hands with antibacterial wash regularly throughout the day and avoid using bar soaps.

Do a Winter Clean (Which is the new Spring Clean!) Make sure you disinfect surfaces, toys, and objects that your children may put in their mouths or touch.

Use disposable tissues to wipe or blow your child’s nose.

Teach your children ‘cough etiquette’, which is for them to turn their heads and cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue or the inside of their elbow if they don’t have a tissue, instead of simply coughing or sneezing onto their hands, which will then spread their germs onto everything they touch.

Take a reusable water bottle to school, instead of using the school water fountain, which may become contaminated with germs, especially during cold and flu season.

Germs remain in stagnant air, so open your windows when weather permits to circulate fresh air.

Get plenty of sleep, be physically active (on the Springfree™ Trampoline of course!), manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

I have missed anything? Make sure you let us know what your tips are to avoiding this season’s flu.

How strict are you in your household in ensuring that your kids eat their daily serve of 5 fruits and vegetables? Do you find it an easy feat or a daily struggle?

Well there is now research telling us depending on what foods we choose in those groups it might not be enough, highlighting the importance of not only quantity, but quality.

For example they say that we should ditch the carrots and oranges and opt for sweet potato and papya instead.

What it all comes down to is this fancy word – phytonutrients. If any of you know what that means than high five! In normal speak its the plant compounds that boost the healthy of your eyes, bone, heart, brain and immune system.

So to boost the health of these area’s, they are suggesting we eat:

  • Sweet Potato’s
  • Kale
  • Rasberries
  • Blueberries
  • Papya

Parents who give more attention to their kids, the better they will turn out? Fact or Myth?

Undefined

Well according to author and family therapist David Code, it’s today’s number one Myth.

raise-happy-kids-marriage-240ds120409

His book (To Raise Happy Kids Put Your Marriage First) argues that parents who channel all their energy into their children are not only doing themselves a disservice but their offspring too.

He suggests that parents should channel their energy into being perfect spouses rather than perfect parents.

“Today’s number one myth about parenting is that the more attention we give our kids, the better they’ll turn out,” the Telegraph quoted Code as telling The Observer.

He said doing this makes for demanding and dissatisfied children.

What do you think? Every family, every child and every situation is different so do you think this comment is relevant to everyone?

Code said that the ‘greatest gift’ parents can give their children is to set them an example with a healthy, happy marriage

Would love to hear what you think about this advice?

How did you get treated on Mother’s Day?

happy-mothers-day-daisy

I compare Mother’s Day to Easter. There is so much hype and excitement in the air! I was lucky enough to go back to my home-town and spend Mother’s Day with the whole family – a treat for all of us and mum was over the moon that we were all in the one place at the one time.

I hope everyone got just as spoilt? An article in the Sun Herald predicted so. Figures from IBISWorld show that Aussie’s will spend $1.3 Billion on their mothers this year. Twenty per cent of that spending will go to taking mum out for dinner as a treat.

Other favourites were Flowers, luxury chocolates, jewellery and gift certificates.

What were you treated with?
